From Accumulation to Income

Retirement planning changes character over time. During the working years it is about accumulation. As retirement approaches, it becomes a question of income: how much the portfolio needs to produce, from which accounts, and for how long.

For business owners and executives, retirement timing is often tied to a business sale, a final equity vesting, or a deferred compensation payout. We plan retirement alongside those events rather than separately.

  • We coordinate savings across employer plans, IRAs, and taxable accounts, and manage those assets in-house as part of the full balance sheet.

  • We model retirement timing against spending needs, business sale or compensation events, and Social Security claiming decisions, along with how much liquidity to hold through the transition.

  • We develop withdrawal strategies across account types, including required minimum distributions, with your CPA’s input on tax considerations. The plan accounts for the risk of withdrawing assets during market declines and is revisited as circumstances change.
